Summary: This hike is best done on a cool, crystal clear day. You will be rewarded with spectacular views of Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Mountains, and possibly the islands laying off the southern California coast. The hike has almost no shade and the trail is a wide fire road with scrub brush on both sides of the trail (i.e. no shade!). I did this hike on a hazy day, so I didn't get to experience the views other guide books talk about, so perhaps I rated this hike lower than it otherwise deserves. Note that when you reach the radio towers, follow a trail that runs up against the chain link fence surrounding the towers, and you will find a bench to sit on with a breathtaking view of L.A. Trailhead: Located in Glendale on Beaudry Boulevard, 0.4 miles west of Country Club Drive. Park on the street, walk up a paved segment of fire road past a vehicle gate and continue on to where the fire road splits (about 0.3 miles). Reviewed by mj on 1/17/2011 Hiked on Jan-15-2011, started around 4:30pm, too late for perfect sunset, but hiked up fast to catch a glimpse of it. Amazing views of the Pacific and the island! A bit worried coming back down, my head lamp wasn't bright enough, but the moon was in 3/4 full so plenty of natural light. Saw backpacker hiking up at 6pm, in the darkness, w/o light. Now that must have been a great hike in the darkness! Till later Verdugo's!
Reviewed by David on 11/10/2010 Good workout, nice views of L.A., the San Gabriels, the ocean, Saddleback, even San Jacinto - you just really need a clear day to do it! The shade on the north-facing slopes is nice, and even if it's cloudy if you're still in the area, it's a good place to get some exercise. Check out my pictures and trip report here.
Reviewed by Udayan on Did this hike today. Spectacular views. And while a clear day is preferred, we went on a hazy day and the haze provided with interesting scenery. We went clockwise in the rising sun and found no shade whatsoever during the ascent, and patches of shade on the descent. Also, the climb is quite steep. The trail is pleasantly challenging, although it is too well defined to experiment and find short-cuts. Good spot for biking too, with most of the trail quite broad.
Reviewed by Sean on 5/3/2010 As many others have said, this is a hike best done when the skies are clear as it offers a fantastic view of the LA basin. It's especially nice to go early in the morning. A word of caution however: I did this hike last weekend and ran into a rattlesnake. It was hiding in the grass just at the side of the road, and it wasn't in a big hurry to leave. Had I been walking on the edge of the road, it would have been easy to step on it. So make sure to keep your eyes open, and if you hike with kids (or dogs), make sure to keep an eye on them too.
