Summary: This is an easy rolling woodland loop trail with some steep hills. It is made up of 5 loop hiking trails. Follow the outer loop, clockwise by taking left turns at all trail intersections, for a 4 mile hike or make it shorter by cutting across on the smaller loops. There are many benches and bridges along the trail. Very large trees and thick canopy make it possible to see great distances through the woods. Highlights include fallen remains of massive American Chestnut trees killed by blight during the mid 20th century, and a stone survey Bench Mark dated 1754. There is a picnic area and playground near the trailhead. Another highlight of this park is the Boyd's hole hiking trail but it is only open from October through March. It is closed during the summer to protect the large numer of Bald Eagles that live along Caledon's Potomac River Shoreline. Limited tours of of eagle habitat are offered from mid June to Labor Day. I don't do it in summer (mosquitos) but all other times of the year it is beautiful. Hurricane Isabel did tremendous damage several years ago, which is still easy to see as you hike along.
