Summary: You may be surprised at what a close, lovely respite this area is from the heat of summer, yet still accessible in the winter. Blue Tree campground is the center of equestrian activities & trails, and provides a chance to ride your horse under trees, on nice gravel/dirt roads or along washbeds -- all with elevation gains & drops so both rider or hiker get a nice moderate workout. The canyons between here and Angel Peak support deer -- visible at dawn/dusk, and mountain lion tracks & sign around the cliffs and ledges. When you begin this trail, descend the slope and turn R at the bottom, following the washbed SW towards Lee Canyon. When you reach junction of paved roads (SR 158 & SR 156), you could continue up Lee Canyon along this wash, or turn L and follow game paths along & top of ridge until you meet gravel Champion Road. Walk along this road to loop back and up along the slope, crossing Lee Canyon Rd, and walking back into Blue Tree campground. Beware monsoons.
Trailhead: I-15 N from Las Vegas to 95 N towards Reno, W on SR 156 (Lee Canyon), head W approx.12.2 mi. to SMALL wood sign "Blue Tree" on R side of road, along with dirt drive. This is Blue Tree CG & you can camp or park horse trailers here. Note that horse trailers should turn L at the first main gravel road inside the camp area; the roads in the back (N) are too steep and narrow for trailers. The SIGNED trailhead is located 1/3 mile W the Blue Tree turnoff (sign) on the L or S side of SR 156. If you are not pulling a horse trailer, you can use the nice parking area for Mack's Canyon which is located further W on SR 156, just before the junction with SR 158 (Deer Springs Hwy). Bicyclists usually prefer to park in the large, open quarry parking on R or N side of SR 156 BEFORE you reach Blue Tree. This Blue Tree area is a MAJOR trailhead & staging area for horse back riders so please be considerate of spooky horses and the larger parking areas needed by trucks & trailers.
