Summary: This is a great hike, particularly if you are a Penn State fan. Go on a clear day to see an awesome view of Beaver Stadium. It is a very strenuous hike to the top but a nice walk around once you are there. In college some people used to take kegs up to the top, now that is some dedication! Trailhead: From State Colleg PA take S Atherton Rd (Business Rt 322E) to Branch Rd (at traffic light look for Lemont sign), left onto Branch Rd 2 miles to traffic light. Continue straight 2 blocks to Mt. Nittany Rd, take a right and go up hill 1 mile to trailhead. A sjort distance up the trail you will see a box with trail maps. The signage for the Mount Nittany hike has been improved (spring 2010) to prevent people from getting lost on their way to the top. Note on elevation gain: the trail starts at ~1400 ft and tops out at ~2000 ft. Great Hike. Not sure about that last review. The trails are marked pretty clearly with a blue or white dot on the trees. Two dots on a tree indicates the trail either splits or goes back down the mountain. If you hike here you will get lost! Yes it may say that there is a loop, but they're wrong! Trails end without notice, trails split in two and you have no idea which way you came from. It also may say there are maps, but go figure there aren't! There are two good views, but other than that you can't see anything. We found our way off the mountain on a deer path and ended up on the opposite side from where we parked and asked numerous people for directions on how to get back. The first man we talked to explained how people are always getting lost because the trails are NOT marked well. Whoever owns and operates these trails should put some more time and money to put in accurate signs and maps about where you are where you're going Mt Nittany is an easy hike, with an alright veiw. For the best hike/veiw of Happy Valley make your way to Shingletown Gap. Take 322 business out of SC towards boalsburg. Turn on rte 45 west. after about 3 or so miles in the small village of Shingletown turn onto Mountain rd. follow it about a mile to a dead end. There are numerous trails that lead all over the front two ridges in Rothrock State Forset. Follow the Blue marked trail to the rock tower for a great view of Happy Valley. Lots of loose rock, an ankle twister. Great views. Mount Nittany is the first hike many people take in Centre County, PA. Its fame comes from the legend of Princess Nittany, and it is a landmark for the Pennsylvania State University, whose mascot, the Nittany Lion, is named for. Hiking Mount Nittany is easy, compared to most of the other hikes in Centre County. Getting there: Find your way to Lemont, PA, near State College (off of route 26). Once in Lemont, you'll find your way around easily, since there are only a few streets in this quiet town. Find Mount Nittany Road off of Pike Street (the main street in Lemont) and take it all the way to the end. You can park there and follow the white blazes--See www.HikePA.com for more info on this hike. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
