Lower Lena Lake

Highlights:

Gentle switch-back trail leads a beautiful mountain lake in just 90 minutes
Near:Lilliwaup, WA
Scenery:
Distance:4.6 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1200 ft
Hike Time:2.5 hours
Difficulty:Easy
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: The hike is very popular one and easy to get to, so expect to see several hikers on summer weekends and holidays. The trail is quite wide in the beginning and is very well maintained the entire route. A series of gentle sloping switch-backs will be found after the first .25 miles, but they are easy to traverse and weave through quiet, deep woods of 2nd grow Fir and Cedar. You will cross several bridges along the way, but most river beds are dry in late summer. Approximately .5 mi. from the lake, the trail splits to the left, for Upper Lena Lake. If you brought Fido, you will enter the Olympic National Park approximately 1/2 mile past Lower Lena and dogs are not allowed in the Park, so keep the pup at Lower Lena. The trail eventually opens up to a spectacular mountain lake, with several campsites along the west shore and heavy boulders on the eastern side. Many hikers dive off these rocks, but caution is the word of the day. Overall - a GREAT hike for all!
Trailhead: Pickup a one-day parking pass at the Quilcene or Hoodsport Ranger Station. The Hamma Hamma Recreational Area turn-off is 22.6 miles south on Hwy-101 from Quilcene or 13.5 miles north on Hwy-101 from Hoodsport. Turn into the Hamma Hamma Recreation. Area and follow a well-paved road for 7.3 miles. The trailhead is on the right and very well marked. Lots of parking is available and good weather and holidays will usually bring a lot of hikers as well. The trail ahead is an easy hike and definitely worth the effort. (Lat:47.59972 Lon:-123.15085)

Lower lake trail is very easy and a good casual day hike for families and younger kids. Ran into a LOT of hikers on the lower trail and campers at the lower lake. Hiked the upper trail with 2 buddies and it is absolutely beautiful. We only ran into 3 other people and there are waterfalls and cool little streams and mini-falls all over the place. Strenuous hike to the top, but well worth it. Be prepared to get wet and dirty. Upper lake is still thawing out, but it still offers some awesome scenery.

this was the first hike i have done in the state of washington. it was awsome. i had a great time. i hiked from the trailhead up to lower lake lena which was beautiful and camped there then the next morning early i had started to hike up to upper lake lena. i hiked all day but never made it to upper lake lena. the trail heading up there was covered in downed trees and a few places were a bit confusing. but i am planning on going back up there this weekend. i hope i actually make it up to the upper lake this time. becuase i want to enjoy its beauty.

Took my wife and two boys ages 1 and 2, both boys walked it just fine, found a log over the lake and jumped in for a swim in the light blue water (very cold), and walked back down just fine, both boys had no problem walking it, took a little longer though, and with a one year old bring a baby back pack and extra diapers, he will get tired.

This is our classic "starter hike". Every year this is like our warm up to the season. Its so beautiful, and helps to get you in shape for more difficult hikes. Since we know the trail so well, its the only hike we feel comfortable hiking at night on. I really love it here, it gives you time to think.

The hike to Lower-Lena was excellent, it was a little wet when we got there but it was a simple and easy hike! The problem had though, was trying to get to Upper-Lena. There's 1 main path and 1 back sort of path. Both had TONS of downed trees and washed out sections of path. Hopefully it gets cleaned up soon but it did look like things had been in disarray for a little while. All in all though, an excellent hike for anyone!

Great hike! Beautiful scenery. We camped at the north end of the lake...there are lots of sites there. We took a day hike up the Two Brothers pass (NNE out of the lake) and this is gorgeous too. Firewood was a problem...despite a lot of work, we couldn't find enough dry wood to make much of a fire. Next time we plan to pack in some wood, or figure out how to find dry in the area. No water available so plan on packing it in or pumping your own.
