Summary: The trail head is located at the entrance to Dukes Forest Camping area in Lake Murray State Park. Park on the side of the road since parking/driving on any unpaved surface is prohibited in the park. The marking for the trailhead is small so be careful not to drive past it (hint-use your GPS). Trail is narrow in most places and meanders through heavily wooded areas. For the most part, the trail conforms to the Lake Murray shoreline and the lake is often visible as the trail crosses it in several places via footbridges. Wildlife viewing is optimal in early morning/late afternoon. Trail is great for night hiking! I saw deer, coyotes and fox during my night hike with my Petzl head lamp. Great trail to bring a small packable fly rod along since lake access is good and fishing in Lake Murray is incredible. Keep a watchful eye out for MTB's since the trail is shared with our mountain biking brethren and is very popular. Pack water as none is offered at trail head.
Trailhead: From I-35 North (From DFW area), take exit #29 (SH 70) and turn right (East). Drive approx. 2 miles to a stop light at 77S and turn right (South). Drive into the Lake Murray State Park entrance and go approx. 2 miles to the entrance to Dukes Forest camping area. Park at the entrance to the camping area and the trailhead is on the NE corner of the intersection of 77S and the Dukes Forest Camping area entrance. Look close since it's a small single track and easy to miss. Best to use your GPS to locate as opposed to sight. (Lat:34.1089 Lon:-97.11494)

I rode my mountain bike at Lake Murray State Park tonight and was very impressed with the trail, the scenery and the challenge. HOWEVER, the Horseflies were HORRIBLE!!!! 3-4 buzzed around me the entire time, no matter how fast or slow I went. Also, once you get on the trail it's not easy to get off and get back to the trailhead. Needs a few more markings and maybe some extra short cut trails to get back to trailhead. Overall it's a very, very scenic trail and has some particularly tough rocky climbs but it's definitely worth trying, just bring LOTS of fly and bug repellent!

Realize there is very few good views of the lake. Lots of bugs (ticks, mesq., horse flys, etc.) and no places to spot and enjoy the scenery unless you are in on of the boat launch areas. I would not recommend this hike to anyone unless you are local and have few or no options. Trails not maintained (trees lying across the trail) either. I would not recommend this trail.
