Summary: The trail starts out with a few switchbacks that eventually turn into a more moderately sloped trail to the first falls, Pony Tail Falls. If you keep going the trail wanders around and then down to some more switchback that lead to a bridge over the Oneonta Gorge. Following the trail will take you to a fork that if you follow to the left will take you to Triple Falls, the Forest Service is repairing the trail after a tree fell last winter. The right fork will take you back to the Scenic Highway. Parts of the trail are steep and rocky but overall the trail is fairly easy. Trailhead: The trailhead is right off of the old Columbia River Highway, just a few miles past Multnomah Falls. The trailhead is Marked Horsetail Falls and has a scenic view for those who just want to drive up with the trailhead to the east of the falls. The trailhead is very clearly marked (Lat:45.35 Lon:-122.04) Trail Guides for Horsetail and Triple Falls: 100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon by William L Sullivan (Navillus Press) 100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon by William L Sullivan (Navillus Press) 100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon by William L Sullivan (Navillus Press) Best Seasons: Fall, Spring, Summer, User Groups: Hikers, Dogs, Ranger Contact: unknown Localhikes Reporter: This hike was submitted by Mike Loomis Trail Reviews Page 1 of 3 Submit your own review The trail was nice and easy, and stocked with plenty of views and optional trails that led to scenic jut-offs. I highly recommend visiting the surrounding available hiking areas off of the Historic Highway as well. There is an interesting hike close by where you can pass between 2 sheer walls, which is the spot where the water flows coming off of a waterfall. I've heard you can walk there in the fall and not get wet, with the water level being lower. Overall, I highly recommend this hike and the surrounding trails. Its one of the better hikes for sure for sound and views of the beauty of the gorge with nature but some of the up tight married couples that do not like animals make it hard to pass on the narrow paths. Ideally if they just would allow others and there pets to pass with out blocking or verbally expressing there fear of a dog it would all be a better experience for all no matter the season. Peace. Dogs are mans best friend. I absolutely love Pony Tail Falls. Not only does the trail go behind the fall, but the river cascades down with a nice peek at the gorge and Columbia River from behind the falls. The hike to Triple Falls is rocky but not too bad, and with the new bridge at Triple Falls is quite rewarding. Highly recommended! This is one of my favorite hikes in the gorge. I have done it in January with lots of ice and in the summer with lots of sun and in the spring with lots of rain. Each season has its own beauty. I have taken my children and they love it too. One of many favorites in the gorge. Love this hike several times each year. The bridge was out, but it was passable. Beautiful, good exercise, and the dogs love the water. We like to start and end at Horsetail Falls, it's prettier. It's a must if you're looking for new place to hike. Definately make the effort to Triple Falls. We did this hike yesterday, or at least part of it. We entered from the first parking area so did a reverse route to the one above. We were going to go to Triple Falls but there were signs in many places that the bridge was out a mile past the intersection with the loop trail. Not sure if the creek was passable or not. Probably was with all the dry weather. We then descended behind to where the trail goes behind the falls and spent some time just enjoying the area. We then descended down to the roadside parking area at horsetail falls. So many people would just see the view from the road (which is lovely) but really don't know what they are missing if they just put on their shoes and take a walk! We absolutely loved it! I hiked this awesome trail in an april, I beleive. Horsetail falls is a big beauty. And then the gorgeous spray of ponytail falls, which if you walk behind in the damp cave, you'll find many rocks for your climbing kids. just past that, the sweeping veiws of the gorge are beautiful. this is a honey of a hike, especialy for photographers, and I want to do it again and again. P.S. It's my dad's favorite hike. great hike my wife and I do it several times a year mainly in winter spring and fall. A quarter mile past the Oneonta bridge there is like a dear trail that leads right off the edge for about 30 feet then goes sideways and brings you to Upper Oneonta Falls. Beautiful falls. only about a 10 minute hike down to it. Maybe less if you are not disabled like me. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
