Summary: This loop trail is an easy hike that takes in the nice view from Hog Rock. Before starting be sure to stop in the visitor center for a copy of the trail guide. This guide will provide a lot of interesting information to go along with the marked posts you'll encounter along the the way. The trail leading to Hog Rock is wide and well worn. It seems most people return via the same path though so the less traveled return portion of the loop is a bit narrower and sometimes a bit muddy. There is a broad mix of flora, from Maple, Oak, Beech, and the occasional American Chestnut, to wild blueberries and Mountain Laurel. Hog Rock itself beckons back to times when hogs would feed ont he abundant acorns. The view from Hog Rock is tranquil and the rock itself offers a nice spot for a picnic lunch with the whole family. Trailhead: From Frederick, MD. Take Route 15 north to Thurmont, MD. Take Route 77 West, the exit sign is marked Catoctin Mountain Park. Travel approximately 3 miles west on 77 and turn right onto Park Central Road. The Visitor Center is on the right (stop in for the interpretive trail guide!). Continue past the Visitor Center on Park Central Road. You will be looking for the third parking area, marked Hog Rock. The parking area is on the right and the trail head is just across the road from the parking area.
