Summary: The Seneca Creek Greenway Trail follows Great Seneca Creek in Montgomery County, MD. It is a wooded, natural surface trail that extends 26 miles from the Potomac River to the Damascus Regional Park trail system. The trail is intersected by several roads, most of which have areas to park. Parking locations are noted on the map. Using these crossroads, you may tailor the distance of the hike. You may choose an out-and-back hike or a point-to-point hike if you have two cars. Some sections of the trail allow horses and bikes and some do not. For detailed instructions and trail notes, check www.senecatrail.org. This is the middle section of the trail. It extends from the Riffleford Road crossing to the Watkins Mill Road crossing. Between Seneca State Park and Route 355 the trail passes under a stone railroad bridge. A few spots on the floodplain may be wet after rain or a thaw. Trailhead: The trail follows Great Seneca Creek and nearly bisects Upper Montgomery County, Maryland, starting at the Potomac River. There are multiple trailheads where the trail crosses roads. Trailheads for the middle section of the trail are located on Riffleford Road, Seneca State Park, Route 355, and Watkins Mill Road. The trailheads may all be reached from the Route 124/Montgomery Village Avenue exit from Interstate 270. To reach Riffleford Road, continue on Route 124 west to Route 28. Turn right and then right again at Riffleford. Park on the shoulder. To reach the Seneca State Park, use the Route 117, Clopper Road exit. The park is on route 117 about 2 miles on the left. Park in the first lot on the right. To reach Route 355, exit toward Montgomery Vilage Avenue and turn left on Route 355 (Frederick Road). Watkins Mill Road is a right turn at a traffic light. Park in the small lot on the righTo reach the Route 355 parking area, cross a bridge and turn right.
