Summary: Though the creation of the rim drive created some of the best opportunities for windshield tourism, it simultaniously eliminated some of the best backcountry in the U.S. Fortunately some trails still remain. This short hike takes you steeply uphill to some of the best vistas of Crater Lake. Starting at the Lodge, follow the trail untill it starts up the slope of Garfield Peak. This trail not be long, but it doesn't mess around so be prepared for burning thighs. Bring some water and a lunch and spend some time enjoying the view. No need to hasten back down to the monument to consumerism. After Garfield Peak, try the Mt Scott and Wizard Island hikes. In winter try snowshoing or cross country skiing the rim but dont try this hike. 10 plus feet of snow somewhat deter you.
Trailhead: From hwy 97n out of Klamath Falls, drive north 27 miles to the hwy 62 turnoff. Turn onto hwy 62 and follow it through the town of fort klamath. From fort klamath follow 62 untill the Crater lake turnoff. Follow the signs to Crater Lake Lodge. The trailhead is just past the lodge. (Lat:42.91106 Lon:-122.14121)
