Summary: The trail to the summit is a short steep climb filled with different color rock formations created by Lassen's volcanic heritage. It's an easy enough hike that a four year old can hike it as was the case with my daughter in the fall of 2002. Be prepared for wind as it was a very windy day on my trip! As always bring a camara, preferably one that works (see link below)! For more details and photos visit my website The Backcountry: Lassen Peak. Trailhead: From Interstate 5 at Red Bluff, head east on Highway 36 for about 50 miles. Turn North on Highway 89 and travel about 5 miles to the park entrance. Be prepared to pay an entrance fee of $5. Continue up the road for about 7 miles. the trailhead parking lot is on the right side of the road. The Trail head is at the far end of the lot. In late summer you should start early if there ia any possibility of thunderstorms - the peak stands in isolation. All in all a good first "big" mountain with every possibility of a successful climb to build your enthusiasm for more serious peaks. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
