Narrows Rim Trail

Highlights:

Trail along rim of 500 mesa leading to La Ventana Natural Arch overlook
Near:Grants, NM
Scenery:
Distance:7.75 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:500 ft
Hike Time:3.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is a somewhat demanding four season hike along the rim of a 500' sandstone mesa overlooking the vast expanse of a 3,000 year old El Mapais lava flow. The rewards are the seemingly limitless views, the precipitous cliffs, and the unique view of La Ventana Natural Arch from above at the end of the trail. The trail is well-maintained and consists of rock, sand, and some hard packed sections. The 500' elevation change is gained steadily over the length of the outbound section of this "there and back" trail making for an easy return hike. It is marked with rock cairns and mileage marks along its length. We spotted bear, coyote, mule deer, and bobcat tracks on the trail when we did this hike midday. There is shade aplenty and generally a breeze at all times atop the mesa. This is a desert hike, however, and sturdy shoes and plenty of water are the rule.
Trailhead: Trailhead is located at the South Narrows Rim Picnic Area 22 miles south of Exit 89 off of I-40. Trailhead is to your right as soon as you enter the dirt road to the picnic area. (Lat:34.83867 Lon:-107.91214)
