Summary: A wonderful hike combining mountain vistas with a lake backdrop. Starts flat along an old road under the flint cliffs. Flint can be gathered here. Indian trail ascends along edge of cliff and provides stellar views and strong heart beats. The only view available from the summit is atop a very tall fire tower. It has stairs but they are metal slats. Those afraid of heights should avoid this hike. Trailhead: Drive to Rockwood Maine and go to the public boat landing. Catch the 'Kineo Shuttle' for your boat ride to Mt. Kineo (which is on an island). There will be a small fee for the shuttle. Ask the boat captain for directions to the trailhead. You will have to cross a golf course to get there. My husband and I haven't hiked for years, and although it was difficult at a few points we had a great time. The views are wonderful. We met nice people along the way. My husband proposed to me at the top of the fire tower. What a beautiful, beautiful place. The view from the fire tower is amazing. I went during July and only passed 3 other groups of hikers. My group and I kayaked out to the island. It was a wonderful trip in the kayak and the hike was excellent. Not really a hike I would suggest for beginners since there are some steep areas. This is a rather simple hike, but the spectacular panoramic view of the area lakes & mountains make it worthwhile. If you're not a hiker, use the loop trail. If you're any kind of hiker, use the more direct trial trail. It's really not all that difficult and takes only about 45 to 60 minutes. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
