Summary: You walk on sacred ground when you visit the tufa cliffs of Fremont Indian State Park. The park got its start when contractors building Interstate 70 through Clear Creek Canyon discovered a heretofore unknown Fremont Indian village atop Five Finger Mesa. The village was excavated and destroyed, but the rock art across the cliff faces remains. This route incorporates two shorter trails within the park that take you past whirls, wavy lines, beast men, deer, and bighorn sheep pecked into the rock by a people claimed both by the Hopi and the local Paiute. The brassy tufa cliffs at the upper end of the trail conceal many more examples of rock art. A pair of binoculars will help you find them from the path that runs parallel to the cliff face. Due to funding cuts, this park is in desparate need of volunteer trail reconstruction. Contact the museum for more information. Trailhead: Fremont Indian State Park is located on Interstate 70 between Interstate 15 and Richfield, Utah. Use exit 17 on Interstate 70 to enter the park. Camping is available. For reservations call 1-800-322-3770. Bring a hat and a pole for this trail. Water is also helpful. Binoculars can help you spot rock art located up high.
