Summary: Its a bit of a steep climb initially through an old forest fire. There is a nice rest stop about half way up along the creek. Pyramid Lake makes a nice place to have a picnic and take in the views of Pyramid Peak which is 7,182 ft. Trailhead: From I-5 take Exit 230/Anacortes/Burlington and drive east on Hwy 20. The trailhead parking area is a mile past the turn off to Diablo on the left just past MP127. The trailhead is on the right side of the road near the creek. NOTE: Hwy 20 is closed in winter. About halfway, though, you cross Pyramid Creek (which is not connected with the lake!) and it's quite pretty, and much cooler and more pleasant. I found the trail to be in very good shape, and easy to follow. The lake is pretty small, and not very appealing for swimming, though it's excellent for dogs. I continued on up the "climber's trail" to the east of the lake, which is a seriously steep, rugged and difficult to follow trail. Once out of the worst of the trees, there are tons of blueberries, ripe as you could want, and beautiful views of Colonial Peak, and the Southern Pickets to the north. Rather disappointing. The view of Pyramid Peak is impressive but the "Lake" is really not much more than a pond and alot of the lower trail is exposed (due to fire) and choked with low-growth vegetation. If you're looking for an easier hike with an actual lake, try Anderson and Watson Lakes down the road at Mile Marker 82 or, better yet, Rainy Lake, 51 miles past Marblemount. (Now, that's lake!) I like this trail a lot, but i must confess...i use it primarilly to use the climbers route from the lake to get up to Pyramid Peak and Colonial Peak...it you do that whole trip (give yourself 4 days)..I would rate this a 5* hike!!! Moderately steep. It provides a good work out. Bring lots of water. Much of the trail is over grown but easy to follow. Many switch backs. Not many views until you get to the lake. View of Pryamid Peak is above the lake. About 3/4 Hours up and about 1 1/4 hours out. Very nice hike. it was a lot of fun and very pretty, but it was a little overgrown. short but fun.
