Summary: On West Trail, past "The Pond", off of Can Creek, turn right at sign up another side creek. Follow creek and lush vegetation to park boundary. Steep climb to caprock and Mountain cedar(ash juniper)-canopied trail. Steep descent back to creek, then retrace creek to sign. Then turn left and retrace path on West Trail via "The Pond" to trailhead at picnic area, or turn right and continue West Trail via next climb to caprock and Dry Can Creek back to picnic area trailhead. Site of annual volksmarch. Trailhead: From SAN ANTONIO, take I-10 west to COMFORT, exit into Comfort, follow State Hwy 27 southwest to CENTER POINT, left on FM 480 to CAMP VERDE, left on State Hwy 173, right on FM 2828 & right on State 16 to MEDINA, left on FM 337 to VANDERPOOL, right on FM 187, 5 miles to STATE PARK, turn left. From SAN ANTONIO, take State Hwy 16 west through BANDERA . . . --TO MEDINA, left on FM 337 to VANDERPOOL, right on FM 187, 5 miles to STATE PARK, turn left. --OR after leaving Bandera, turn left on FM 470 to TARPLEY, at FM 187 road curves left and turns into FM187 to VANDERPOOL, at Vanderpool continue 5 miles to STATE PARK, turn left.
