Mt Waumbek - Winter

Beautiful trail through open hardwoods to great view of Northern Presidentials
Near:Jefferson, NH
Scenery:
Distance:7.2 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:2750 ft
Hike Time:4.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: The trail starts off through a beautiful hardwood forest with an open feel with out any leaves on the trees. The grade begins as a steady, gentle incline and never gets very steep. At 3,000 feet the hard woods are replaced by evergreens, creating a cozy feel as you approach the summit of Starr King. The best views are from Starr King to the south overlooking a vast plain and the entire Presidential Range. The trail continues on at the large stone fireplace left from a former shelter. The summit of Waumbek is wooded, but the walk over from Starr King is beautiful.

Most of the hikers we met there were either peak-baggers or locals, both very friendly and helpful, especially the group from "Big Blue".

Trailhead: The trail starts on side road off the north side of Rt 2, 0.2 miles east of Rt 115 jct. The parking lot is behind a small residential area, drive up the hill, past the houses until you see the sign identifing the parking lot. (Lat:44.25182 Lon:-71.2791)
