Summary: One of the best kept secrets here in Utah are some of the mountains less frequented by the crowds in the greater Wasatch area One such mountain is Deseret peak. Hiding west of the Oqirah mountains lay the lesser known Stansbury mountains with its highest point being Deseret Peak Pronounced DES-ER-ET To my surprise I found Deseret peak an oasis of beauty, far different than the sand and sage brush surrounding it along the trail I found towering aspen and evergreens, lush green meadows and wild flowers everywhere. My hike to the peak was an easy one at 3.5 miles and 3500 feet I took my time and completed the trip in a little over 6 hours. From the top the views were incredible, a 360 view of most of northern Utah. To the north the Great Salt lake with her two great islands. To the east the Oquriahs and the Wasatch and to the west the great desert and the salt flats. So if you are looking for an exceptional hike You will find it at Deseret Peak. Trailhead: From Salt Lake City take I-80 west. Exit onto SR 36 then take SR 138 to Grantsville. You'll need to drive through Grantsville. A sign in town points the way up into South Willow Canyon. A fairly good dirt road leads to the trailhead at the Loop Campground (Lat:40.47152 Lon:-112.63668) Trail Guides for Deseret Peak: Best Seasons: Fall, Summer, User Groups: Hikers, Dogs, Horses, Ranger Contact: Wasatch-Cache National Forest 125 South State Street Salt Lake City, UT 84138 Localhikes Reporter: This hike was submitted by Matty Ross, who has posted 26 other hikes on this site Trail Reviews Submit your own review I waited until late fall to make the trip. The canyn is closed at a little more than 4 miles from the loop campground trailhead. It made for a longer, more arduous trip than I had planned. well worth the trip! Lots of snow and wind on top. Nobody at all on the trail. The views are good, despite the smoke from the california wildfires. (I wished California would export something good to us for once). The trail is probably best saved for folks who can handle the elevation and incline. My feet were tired at the end of the day, but a great way to spend the day. I hiked this peak with my two sons carrying full backpacks, and spent the night at the nearby lake. An incredibly beautiful loop! The contrast is amazing, ascending from desert to alpine. I would certainly do it again, even at my young age of 61. I love this hike and have made the trip several times over the past 20 years. I would have to agree with AMD that this hike is a bit stiffer than just a walk through the woods. I turned 50 last week and my wife and I humped to the saddle where the trail splits to the summit at a little over 10,000 feet elev. My wife had just returned from 40 days at sea level and she ran out of gas there. My map makes that to be 2.77 miles and over 3600' gain. Still, an beautiful hike with awesome views! I hiked the Deseret Peak trail after reading the summary on this web site. Most of the trail reviews I read seem to be written by very physically fit men and women. This review of the Deseret Peak trail is being written by a middle-aged, 20 lbs. over weight, woman who hikes regularly. I actually had been on the Deseret Peak trail several times before and never went all the way to the top. In the summary it said the hike was an “easy one at 3.5 miles and 3,500 feet.†It is a neat trail and when you get to the top, it is worth the pain. However, it was not an easy hike. For my 46-year old knees, it would probably be rated moderate at least. Definitely not easy. The trail is a steady climb getting steeper the further you go.
