Summary: This is one of the dry areas in the Olympic Mountains. It is a long steep hike through beautiful scenery to a picture perfect lake. A bit overcrowded and lots of black flies and mosquitos once you get there. Use a water filter if you need to replenish your water supplies - don't count on purification tablets unless you enjoy a bout of giardia! Trailhead: From Port Angeles go east on Hwy 101 to Palo Alto Road which turns into Forest Road 28. Turn right on Forest Service Road 2860 and drive 11 miles to a large trailhead parking lot. Hike the Dungeness Trail for a mile to the Royal Basin Trailhead. A Northwest Forest Pass is required to park at the trailhead.
