Summary: The trail starts at the south corner of the parking lot. The trail is located along the edge of the dune field, and is well marked by brown posts. A trail manual is available at the trailhead. Hike time is listed as 30 minutes, but you will spend more time if you read the guide and study the plants. The elevation profile indicates a flat hike, but the constant rolling dunes give an elevation gain of 190 feet in short up and down sections. NOTE: This is not a play area! The trail is for nature and dune study. The play area is several miles further in. The white sand reflects the sun light and heat. Wear protection from the elements and the weather of the season. No water available past the HQ, so come prepared. Trailhead: From Alamogordo NM, drive 15 miles west on US-70 to the park entrance. From Las Cruces NM, drive 50 miles east on US-70 to the park entrance. From the main entrance, proceed into the park 2.75 miles to a well marked parking area. The trail begins at the sign, and is well marked by wooden posts the entire way.
