Knob Mtn & Jeremys Run Loop

Highlights:

Dual terrain hike with mountain ridge and stream bed forming loop.
Near:Luray, VA
Scenery:
Distance:13.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:3500 ft
Hike Time:7.5 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Loop

Summary: This trail is three parts. The first part goes down hill to Jeremy's Run, crosses over, and goes up the hill to the Knob Mountain trail. It is all wooded and very pretty. The second segment is the Knob Mountain trail which is almost a road and fairly flat until it heads down toward Jeremy's run. Not a lot of openings for viewing the valleys but a nice trail through the woods with abundant wildlife. The third part is the trail along Jeremy's Run. It crosses the stream numerous times. Waterproof boots are highly recommended. The rocks are slippery and walking in the water is best in most cases. High water can be a problem. There are signs of bears everywhere but you are most likely to see them around the picnic area. The trail is fairly flat along the run. Return back up the crossover trail to the parking lot. If you can time a hike with the Mountain Laurel in the spring, or max fall leaf color, these would be the most scenic times.
Trailhead: Start at the back of the Elkwallow picnic area loop in Shenandoah National Park. There is parking at the trailhead. See the photo of sign at trailhead. (Lat:38.44458 Lon:-78.18687)

I've done the hike many times, start at Elkwallow & go down the AT then deop down to Jerem's Run Creek. Hike back up to Elkwallow via the Creek. You may get wet but it is worth it. There are several points to camp, one about 1/2 way down to the creek on the left (South) side of the trail - the only wide spot on that segment. Another is a mile or so up the creek. It a hike that you don't want to end.

Knob Mt was limited in its views and very dull however Jeremys Run made up for any loss of views.----There are some very good camp sites on the way down Knob Mt.----Jeremys Run crosses water around 11 times or so so plan to get your feet wet. The views of Jeremys Run are excellent and youll never get tired of whats around the next corner. I found a excellent camp site about 1 1/2 mile or so from the foot of Knob Mt and spent the night listening to the water run. Keep looking for a wide spot in the stream and a ridge to the right of the trail, just over this ridge is a campsite big enough for a large group.I also found what appears to be the ruins of a old homestead about 1/4 past the camp.
