Summary: From the trailhead, proceed east into the canyon. You will intersect a boardwalk that takes you over the stream and deeper into the canyon. When you have seen enough, return down the boardwalk. Watch for the place where you intersect the lower trail. Stay right on the lower trail to the picnic area. There are picnic benches under the trees along the stream. Continue west on the trail until you reach the T turning south past Frenchy's cabin ruins. Follow this trail to return to the start.
Trailhead: From the intersection of US-70 and US-54 in Alamogordo, head south on US-54 8.9 miles to Dog Canyon Rd. Turn left (east) on Dog Canyon Rd. Proceed 4.5 miles to the end of the road. Park in the right parking lot. The trailhead is at the front door of the visitors center. There is a $5 per vehicle day use fee. (Lat:32.74836 Lon:-105.91458)
