Strenous Hike, Great Views
Near:Bethlehem, NH
Scenery:
Distance:5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:2700 ft
Hike Time:4.5 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:Bush wacking
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: A very difficult hike over the caps. It is steep at times, the rocks are rugged and the trail demanding. There are places where treking poles are of no use mostly because of the steepness or the numerous holes between the boulders.

We watched a continuous stream of cog railway trains belch dark smoke into the air, sometimes reducing the view and certainly reducing the feel of solitude. Their lonesome whistle was howver, enjoyable.

I did not rate this as a favorite hike because it is arduous and while the views are spectacular, I will not be running back to do it again soon. I did not find the reward / work ratio to my liking.

It could be a great winter trip if there were access to the trailhead.

Trailhead: At the top of the Jefferson Notch Road there is a well maintained parking lot with a fee box. This road is closed in the winter so there is no easy access to the trail head during the winter.

You get to the Jefferson Notch Road from the Base Road which is the access road to the Cog Railway (Lat:44.30405 Lon:-71.31648)

This hike is a tough one for sure. The views were awesome and to me the work ratio for the view was fair. Being so high to start and so short in miles you knew there had to be soem price to get up there. my pics and review here begin.lloydsjourney.com
