Summary: La Purisma Mission State Historic Park will make you feel as if you've stepped off a time machine and into the early 1800's. This is a mission that failed at its goal of establishing a city and trade outpost, so the area exists in the middle of rolling hills pretty much as it did hundreds of years ago. The mission and its outlying buildings fell into disarray after the Mexican Revolution and the land became a private ranch. Thankfully the entire complex was preserved and restored and exists in a state that is strikingly reminiscent of the colonial era. The trail heads up to the cross above the mission and provides wonderful views of the mission itself, then it follows the fence line and loops around to the main loop which connects with the original mission road - El Camino Real. Trailhead: Take the 101 north of Gaviota to the turnoff for the 246 west. Drive 14 miles towards Lompoc. Veer right onto Purisma Road, and make a right into the entrance for the state park. Parking and entrance to the park is $4, but the price of admission is well worth the trails and history you will be exposed to. There are numerous trails to explore and $1 pays for a map that details them all.
