Summary: This is a loop hike, which can be done in either direction. I like to hike it "counter-clock wise", and bike it "clock-wise." This is the "hike" version which climbs about 800 feet in 1.5 miles. Start at the gate and head up the 540 road about 1 mile, then take a right onto the 543 road, which is really a large single-track now. At the top of the climb, take a left onto the 560 "top" road. Note that just before the 4+1 Junction you'll pass the "Cap House" which was built in the 30's to store the blasting caps used to log and make the roads. At the 4+1 Junction, go left on the 500 road down to Cronemiller Lake junction. Go left and go along the lake and OSU Timber Team practise area back on the 540 road again and follow it back to the Adair gate. Trailhead: From Corvallis, OR take 3rd Street/HWY 99 W north about 6 miles to Camp Adair store (on your right) and if you look across the street you'll see the "Adair Orange Gate". This is your starting point. Directions are Excellent! I see why you hike the one way - it took me about 24 minutes to get up the steep hill, but it was all gradual decline after that. :) View at the top is nice. Cell phone and wifi coverage is great (kept this webpage open for directions). at the 4+1 road, the left turn was labeled with a name (I forget what as I ran into some GeoCachers and we were chatting), and I didn't see "500" anywhere, but it was the correct road. Dogs and I finished in just under 2 hours, but we might have been pushing it a little. I'll be looking at your other hikes, thanks! We thoroughly enjoyed this hike with our dog. Lots of uphill but the exercise felt great and there was a ton on shade provided. We encountered 7 other parties during our hike and 5 had dogs. Almost all were on leash or excellent voice command which we appreciated. I would definitely recommend printing this hiking overview of info and taking it with you. There are a A LOT of different trails you can take (most of which are numbered or named), and without a map of the area, one could become disoriented fairly easily. There was a lake at the end of 540 which was only about 20 minutes in. Really enjoyable. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
