Summary: This hike begins just past the glacial boulder. It wanders through lodgepole pine to the lip of the colorful grand canyon of the yellowstone. At the canyon rim good views are seen of the silver chord cascade, yellowstone's tallest waterfall. After that the trail winds through the woods before the trail junctions with the mt washburn/washburn hot springs trail. From there the trail returns again to the lip of the canyon to begin the ardurous trip down to the yellowstone river. The views are fantastic and the bank of the yellowstone is a great place to have lunch or camp. Then turn around to begin the extremely strenuous hike upwars to the rim, gaining 1400 feet in about two miles. Trailhead: from the canyon junction in yellowstone drive toward inspiration point. park where a giant granite boulder sits on the side of the road. the trail begins just past the boulder.
