Allegheny Highlands Trail-Deal to Frostburg

Summary: This section of the AHT takes one up and over the Eastern Continental Divide, that point being just east of Deal where the trail cuts through a culvert beneath Old Deal Road.

The keystone of the trail is the Big Savage Tunnel. A $13 million refirbishment project of the 3294.6 foot tunnel has lights and doors to keep out the winter cold. At the eastern portal there is a spectacular panoramic view into Maryland.

The trail on the western side of Big Savage has an average grade of .8%. The trail on the eastern face has a grade of 1.75%.

Trailhead: To access the parking area at Deal from Meyersdale, take Glace City Rd. east to Deal Rd. Turn Right on Deal Rd. and then Right again onto Old Deal Rd. (N39 45.687 W78 55.840) There is a handicap accessable portajohn.

To get to the parking area at Frostburg turn north onto Depot Street. Turn right onto New Hope Road just after the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Station and then down the hill a short way. (N39 39.552 W78 55.317) There is a handicap accessable portajohn and a switchback trail to take you back up to the train station. The Trail Inn is developing a campsite behind the B&B for the budget minded thru-hikes and bikers.

The Big Savage Tunnel is closed from about mid-December to mid-April to protect it from winter cold. During that time, to get from Deal to Frostburg you must take the road. Frome Deal, travel west to McKenzie Hollow Road. Turn left on Finzel Road and then onto Route 40 down into Frostburg. (Lat:39.76144 Lon:-78.93067)
