Summary: White-blazed trail is generally easy walking, with occasional traversing of rock outcroppings and small boulder fields. Views are generally hemmed in by trees, but two scenic vista are marked by signs on trail, one north of 233 allows view of South Mountain Restoration Center, and the more spectacular Chimny Rocks vista is close to the southern carpark. One tricky area in the trail is a jog on Coral Ridge Road (CR1 & CR2 on map). Be sure to follow the white blazes; there are several false trails leaving the road. Hiking south to north gets the vertical change out of the way, leaving a predominantly gentle downhill the rest of the way. I prefer coming from the north, leaving a moderately steep descent at the southern end. For those who only wish to climb to Chimney Rocks from the sourth and go back down, there is a blue-blazed alternative trail (an old logging road) at the Chimney Rock turnoff which rejoins the Appalachian Trail at Tumbling Run Creek. Trailhead: Ample north carpark is at Caledonia Furnace, intersection of US 30 and SR 233. Proceed approx .3 mi to west accross open field to join trail on south side of Conococheague Creek. South carpark is Old Forge Road intersection with Tumbling Run Creek; space for two cars on either side of bridge. Hike can be cut in half by using one of two parking spaces where trail intersects SR 233. Reviewed by MikeS on 5/29/2006 Very nice hike from the south end carpark up to chimney rocks. Probably takes about 2-1/2 hours to go up and come back down at an average pace.
Reviewed by Jimbo on 10/7/2005 This is a very nice hike. The forrest was beautiful, but I didn't get to see much wild life. (Probably because my friends were singing) The views were OK, but not what I expected based on the altitude. Caladonia is a great place to park and Tumbling Run shelters (and spring) were a nice place to camp. I imagine that this hike would be GREAT in late OCT.
Reviewed by mark on 7/17/2005 this hike was great. there are a couple of difficult spots but it's worth it for some of the views. i hiked 7 miles of it and there were 3 look out points that were amazing. some parts are very rocky, some are through heavily wooded areas. i went after it rained and it was foggy up to my knees. it felt like iwas walking through an enchanted forest. there was also one boulder field that was amazing. this hike was the first hike i had ever been on and i love it it's my secont favorite. go in spring Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
