Summary: This past Mother's Day, I decided to explore a section of the Appalachian Trail (AT) on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. For those who are unacquainted with the region: the Delaware Water Gap is the spot on the PA/NJ border were the mighty Delaware river turns sharply East in its course and cuts through the Appalachian Mountains. There are a couple of nice spots just below the summit of Mt. Minsi that provide lovely views of this feature as well as of Mt. Tammany in NJ. The old fire tower on Minsi's summit is long gone, only the base of the concrete pillars remains. There is however a massive, fenced-in radio tower further west along the trail. Unfortunately, I had to travel a good mile from the summit before the traffic noise from I-80 receded entirely. The turn-around point of this Hike, Tott's Gap is little more than a dip in the ridgeline where the AT passes across the corner of an old stone building foundation. Trailhead: Heading East on Interstate 80 towards Stroudsburg, take the exit for Route 611 South. Drive 0.6 miles on 611 South to a stoplight in the town of Delaware Water Gap, PA, and make a left, staying on 611 South. Go another 0.3 miles and make a right onto Mountain Rd. Another 0.1 miles, and you take a left at the fork in the road. Park at the Lake Lenape parking lot. (Lat:40.98 Lon:-75.14) Trail Guides for AT - Lake Lenape to Totts Gap via Mt. Uphill to Mt Minsi, but then mostly flat on a woods road. Went to Totts Gap, which was just a sign in a hollow with lots of mosquitoes. Should be nicer later in the fall when the leaves are down. At this time, limited views. I have recently taken up trail running and love this little hike. Just enough workout and can be done quickly after work--can even jog down the access road if you get stuck at the top in the dark. This hike is one of my favorites. I do it a few times a year, often running the majority of it. Beautiful in the fall, and wonderful views. I got a little lost and saw a black bear but I'll definatly go back in the spring. Did the hike on March 26. It was slippery because of the melting snow, but on the other hand it made it more intresting. Hills wear on you, but it's worth it to make it to the top. warning very difficult in the winter but the views are well worth the hike we do again in the spring Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
