Summary: This is part 2 of 4 hikes that could be done as individual day hikes or strung together for a 4 day backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail to complete the state of Maryland. There are spots requiring careful footing across rocky terrain, but this section is largely smooth and enjoyable. You will enjoy some splendid walks through long stretches of forest along the ridge of South Mountain, leading to spectacular views from Black Rocks and Annapolis Rocks. After descending from the rock vistas and crossing I-70, you will begin the gentle climb up to Washington Monument, the first monument to the first president, built in 1827. Spend time here learning about some war history and visiting the museum. Descending again, the trail is gentle for the last couple of miles where you pass an interesting Gothic Chapel and Stone Mountain Inn, a 200 year old inn, visited by many presidents. This will end your day hike or pitch a tent at nearby Dahlgren's campground. Trailhead: You can start this hike from Wolfsville Road. From the east, take I-70 Exit 35 and go right onto Myersvill Road. Turn right onto MD 64, and again right onto Foxville Road. Turn right onto Wolfsvill Road. You will cross the AT shortly and just after there is a small parking area on the right. Follow the blue blazed trail back to the where you crossed the AT and begin your journey south. Stayed the night at Annapolis Rocks where there are nice campsites, a ranger posted there and nice spring water. Great sunset at the overlook. Walked the next day from Annapolis Rocks to Dahlgrens. Washington Monument really good, although unreliable soda machine at the state park!! Dahlgrens was wonderful and peaceful! Power outlet in the shower room! Great water at the water source. Several great views, but landscape looks alike most of the time. We hiked 20 miles from Cowell to Crampton Gap. This included about 3 hours of night hiking, no lights. I would not reccomend this, too much. Really enjoyed this hike. After a long couple days of hiking, Dahlgren's Backpacker Campground was an absolute gift from heaven. Water, showers, bathroom...the only thing that was missing was my recliner and TV....VERY nice. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
