Summary: This is an incredible hike. A good place for silent contemplation and meditation. The trees you walk amongst are the oldest living things on the planet. Some have been here longer than civilization itself, which gives you enough to think about without your mind succumbing to disbelief. I took this hike the day after I climbed Telescope Peak, and the elevation gains were a little steep in places, but shouldn't present a problem, except possibly for very small children. The trees are windswept, fire scorched, and twisted by time - the oldest are giant half dead gnarled husks with parts of the tree clinging to life. Sections of the tree die and exude pitch to prevent water loss, while other parts remain alive. This is amazing photography territory. Enjoy it, you will want to return and bring others. Trailhead: Take the 395 to Big Pine, from there take Highway 168 East into the Inyo National Forest. Drive northeast for 12.8 miles to White Mountain Road. turn left and drive north for 10 miles to the Bristlecone Pine Forest turnoff. There is a wonderful staffed visitor center, with friendly rangers and some nice gifts - there are a few trails here, all are wonderful and easy to find. Always make sure the road is open if you go in winter. Grandview campground is beautiful, nearby, and free.
