Summary: Starting in a fern-filled forest, the trail climbs uphill for 0.6 mile before reaching the top of Coopey Falls, a 150 to 175 foot horsetail waterfall, and the footbridge crossing the creek. Continuing on, the trail begins to switchback uphill for 1.6 miles before reaching the ridge crest. Turn left at a junction to a spectacular gorge viewpoint. Use extreme caution at the steep cliff edge. Some nice flower features of this hike are the wildflower displays (which peaks in May) of blue-eyed grass, star-flowered Smiliacina, and trillium at lower levels. Also you get a grand view of the Gorge once you reach the top. There is even a bench to rest yourself on that overlooks the entire area. Trailhead: Eastbound on I-84 Take Bridal veil exit # 28. The trailhead is south of the Historic Columbia River Highway, opposite the junction with the interstate access road in Bridal veil. Westbound I-84 Take Ainsworth State Park exit # 35 and follow the Historic Columbia River Highway for 7.1 miles (11.4 km). This trail does not require a parking pass permit. Trail Reviews Page 2 of 8 Submit your own review It was our first hike in the Gorge this season and found it to be very challenging with a continual uphill hike, maybe later on in the season after we get in shape. This is a nice hike. Beautiful view of the gorge once you reach to the top. Not too difficult. Certainly recommended. This was a strange, rewarding, and annoying hike. On the way up I hated it. However, once we got to the view, I loved the rest. Awesome view. I might hike again when it's warmer-I had a cold when we went. Really nice little hike. I went the day before Halloween and it was quite rainy at times. Seeing as how the trailhead is so close to Portland, I expect that I'll be visiting Angel's Rest many times. I posted a video of my hike on my blog: http://www.wildpnw.com/2010/11/03/rainy-day-hike-to-angels-rest-in-the-gorge/ well maintained, but busy, considering its proximity to portland. great views, worth the huffing and puffing. no shade on top for pets to have a break from full sunshine. Awesome hike! Kinda missed not having mile markers on the trail so you can tell about how far into it you are. Also, the summit isn't marked (but the trail continues on to other trails, Devil Falls or something) so first timers might not realize they've made it. We'll def do it again in the future though! Beautiful! Great hike...quite strenuous but the views were such a treat...would do it again earlier in the year so we can see the flowers...can't believe there were still so many beautiful flowers this late in the season. I am giving this a "wouldn't hike again" because I am very out of shape and nearly had a heart attack when reaching the top. Otherwise, I would totally hit this every week!
