Summary: Hemmed in by housing developments, a gold course, and one of the busiest freeways around, Batiquitos Lagoon won't be confused with the wilderness backcountry. However, if you're an avid bird watcher (or would like to try this popular pastime), Batiquitos Lagoon provides excellent opportunities to view a number of endangered species. Interpretive signs along the trail illustrate the more threatened birds found around the lagoon, as well as the rare and endangered species that visit. These include the re-necked phalarope, elegant tern, marbled godwit, yellow warbler, California least tern, and Snowy plover. Because of the sensitive nature of these birds, read and follow the notices - and stay on the trail. Trailhead: From the Poinsettia exit off I-5, go east and turn right (south) on Batiquitos Dr. (the second stoplight past the freeway), then down the hill toward the lagoon and turn right onto Gabbiano Lane. Drive to the end and park in the 6-car lot to the west or on the street. Walk through the posts onto the asphalt driveway and past the fenced desiltation basin (full of cattails) to the Nature Center [on the left]. Reviewed by C on 4/17/2006 This is a very accessible, easy trail. A nice place to go on a Sunday afternoon when you want to take your dog on a walk. Unfortunately, there's signs all over saying bicycles are NOT allowed. I think the scenery is a little better than 3 stars. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
