Summary: From the trailhead on the "Fire Wardens Trail" the trail is relatively flat and immediately there is an easy stream crossing. The trail gradually gets steeper and quite rocky. At about 2.5 miles the trail splits, the Fire Wardens Trail continues up to Avery Col and the Horn's Pond Trail splits off to the left. There are a couple of stream crossings. As you near Horn’s Pond there are some huge boulders. At Horn's Pond the trail, now the AT, continues quite steeply to the North and South Horns with elevations of about 4000 ft with both summits above treeline. Descend off the Horns back into tree cover then three miles further to the top of West Horn (again above treeline) with splendid views in all directions. Descend into Avery Col (great views from Avery peak also .5 m further) where you rejoin the Fire Wardens Trail and follow it back to the trailhead. The first mile down the Fire Wardens Trail is extremely steep, be very careful in wet conditions or in winter. Trailhead: From Farmington take Route 27 north towards Carrabassett, approx. four miles after passing Sugarloaf Ski Resort, there will be a dirt road on the right just after the AT crosses route 27. Take this dirt road (cross the AT again) for about 2.5 miles to the trailhead. Once you start hiking Stratton Brook Pond will be on your right and a kiosk will give general hiking info for the area and maps are sometimes available at this kiosk.
