Summary: Nice suburban woods used some by mountain bikers and paint-ballers, but largely forgotten amongst the encroaching development. Three are more beautiful locations to escape to in New England, but this one might be easier to fit into a busy schedule if you live or work in the area. Trailhead: There is a parking area open dawn to dusk in a residential neighborhood (look carefully between the houses) on route 129 in Billerica, about 0.8 miles from the route 3 interchange. It's a pleasant, flat hike that was relatively dry even after a rainstorm. North of Route 129 is a small water park for kids and a decaying fitness trail. Beware that hunting is allowed in the State Forest south of Route 129. There are some large discarded items (stove, sink, etc.) that have a lot of bullet holes, and I think there is a rod and gun club not too far away. The trail itself is very nicely maintained. In season a free mini-waterpark is available for children, plus Picnic tables, fireplaces, flush toilets, Nature trail, & workout trail. Beautiful stands of trees. Pet friendly. Signs of paint-ball activity. Archaeological remains & glacial remains. Gilson Hill provides a good cardiac workout. Letterboxing & Geocaching activities available. Middlesex Fells and GBFSP are more scenic, but this area is nearby & free. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
