Hike to a view point high above the Potomac River.
Near:Potomac, MD
Scenery:
Distance:2.1 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:500 ft
Hike Time:1.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: The main attraction at Blockhouse Point Park is two viewpoints looking down on the Potomac River and C&O canal from about 80 ft above. Even with full foliage the views are excellent. There are rapids on the river here, and you are likely to see geese and the occassional cormorant. Binoculars are recommended. Along the trail you pass a horse farm which can be beautiful at dusk. Deer inhabit the park but you are likely to see more in the backyards on your way out River Road. This is great hike for family or couples, who want to take a picnic basket to enjoy with the view. The trail map only shows the way to one of the viewpoints, for simplicity. The non-red lines on the map, show where other trails cross. The trail is well maintained but not well marked. Please note that this trail is for hikers only but there are trails for bikes and horses in the park.
Trailhead: From the I-495 beltway in Montgomery County, MD, take the River Road exit going west. Follow River Road through Potomac, MD and out to Blockhouse Point Park. There are three places to park on the left side of the road. This hike assumes you can find a spot in the last one. If not, park in the large middle location and consult the trail map on a large sign board. The horse trail will lead you along River Road to the beginning of this hike. (Lat:39.04248 Lon:-77.18575)
