Summary: This ia a great hike to see just a few of the wonders of the Wonderland Trail on Mt. Rainier. Depart from the Box Canyon parking lot and head into the woods. In just over a mile you will arrive at Nickle Creek camp. From there, you begin a long uphill through the Cowlitz Divide which brings you out on a ridge with views in all directions. You can see south past Mt. Adams and St. Helens, to the Northwest is the upper half of Rainier. Keep an eye out for bear, Elk, and Deer along this route. In early summer flowers paste beautiful colors along the trail. As you approach Indian Bar, you look down upon it and see the shelter at the south end of Ohanapecosh Park. What a great place to have lunch by the stream and view the Wauhaukaupauken Falls. Once rested re-trace your steps and enjoy the views one last time on the way out. Camping by permit is allowed at both Nickle Creek and indian Bar. Trailhead: Upon entering Mt. Rainier National Park from Ashford, drive towards Longmire. Once you reach Longmire stop to make sure you have all your provisions as it is the last place to get food or fuel. Continue on Paradise road several miles to the Paradise cutoff. Stay to the right and do not take the cutoff to Paradise, instead continue on Stevens Canyon road past Reflection Lakes and down the hill. At approx. 15 miles past Longmire you will come to the Box Canyon parking area on your right. Secure your vehicle and proceed accross the street to the Wonderland Trail marker and the start of your journey. There is a bear that likes to feed in the meadows around the cabin. He checked me out when I hiked in, but seemed happy with his vegetarian fare. If you camp at Indian Bar, try to head up to Panhandle gap for amazing views and mountain goats! Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
