Summary: A long trail that has a lot of wildlife activity (birds, beavers, deer). Great views of the upper Boyer Chute and Missouri. Called the grass loop trail for obvious reasons, involves both mixed grass prairie and riparian forest. While close to river at times, you are never so close as to be dangerous for children. Boyer chute #2 geocache is along this trail.

The trail has a shortcut that cuts off about half of the distance if you get tired. The short cut is at about N41 27.900 W95 59.120. There is also a trail to Missouri River access at this point.

The last half of the trail is without shade. Bring lots of water, insect repellent, and sun block.

After taking the whole loop, its amazing that the loop only covers the upstream half of the island. The area was flooded in 1993, and the trail along the chute is a great ecology lesson for recovery after a flood. Previously trashed backwater areas are now grassy and quite pretty. Nice hike close to Omaha.

Trailhead: This trail departs from the main parking area at the Boyer Chute National Wildlife refuge (N41 27.105, W95 57.054). There are latrines and information brochures here. Info can also be had at the main gate (N 41 27.095, W95 57.314). There are picnic tables here and across the chute at the Meadowlark trail head. The parking is handicap-accessible. The first 500 feet of the trail from the parking lot to the shelter is concrete and wheelchair accessible. The trail is a loop and is best taken in a clockwise manner starting at the meadowlark trail. The wheelchair accessible trail ends at a gravel trail (N41 27.168, W 95 56.776). The gravel is part of a slightly longer nature trail loop. Continue on the gravel to N41 27.257, W 95 56.883, from here the trail is grassy and well marked. (Lat:41.45175 Lon:-95.9509)

Excellent hike. Brochure only reflected the upper half of the hike. We traveled the entire perimeter, the second half of which appeared to have been newly mowed. Would be interested in knowing the approximate distance of the entire perimeter. mewagners@cox.net Will definately hike again.
