Summary: The Brushy Mtn Trail provides a look at old home sites as well as a nice challenge with over a 3000' elevation gain. This trail is not steep but is doesn't give many breaks as it is a steady up hill climb to the peak of Brushy Mountain. There are several stream crossings that are easy to cross and a few with great photo opportunities. At about 5 miles you will come to an intersection at the Trillium Gap Trail, you will proceed through the "Rhodo Tunnel" on the Brushy Mountain Trail, on a future hike you could take the Trillium Gap to Mt. LeConte. This route has been described as the most challenging as well as the longest trail to LeConte. It is a short but steep hike to the Peak of Brushy Mountain, which is a heath bald, heath being a family of shrubs and plants. There are several trails that roam around the top for views of LeConte and back into the Sevier County valley. Trailhead: I-40 Exit 407 follow Hwy 66 South 8 miles to 441 South then 12.5 miles to 321North then 5.7 miles to Greenbrier Road then 3.8 miles to parking as the road ends at gate. About 1.50 miles into the hike the road loops around take the first trail marked Brushy Mountain Trail. No let up in asscent. On up to Mt LeConte in 2005. Spent the night and back next day. Going down now easy but easier than up. Plan to go again in July 07 on my 80th birthday. So sorry everyone cannot view the beautiful scenery. We took your hike and added a few miles just for fun. We went from Porters Creek to Brushy Mountain to Trillum to Mt LeConte 18.2 miles round trip in 9 hours 20 minutes which was strenuous. The wildflowers were beautiful on The Brushy Mountain trail. I did see a copperhead on the side of the trail..........but it was April 30, 2006. We really enjoyed the trail. Have FUN Decent trail, but there are honestly better ones in the Smokies. We started early, so very few people, but saw many kids with candy and pop cans on the decent. The most exciting part was sharing the trail with the Llamas that haul stuff to the top of LeConte. Gives a good view of the NC/TN state line ridge where the AT runs. Great view from Brushy Mt. to north and south. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
