Burnt Meadow Mountain

Highlights:

Short hike, great elevation gain, super views of mountains and lake
Near:Brownfield, ME
Scenery:
Distance:2.4 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1194 ft
Hike Time:2 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: Three steep ascents leading to small peaks. The second is the hardest because it is tedious. The third is the shortest and steepest - hand over hand climbing may be required. There is loose gravel on the trail making it more dangerous.

The view of Mt. Chocorua is very nice. Mt. Washington can be seen.

Crampons are a must if you hike this in the winter. A good family hike.

Trailhead: Route 160 approximately 1/2 mile south of the pond. Trailhead is not marked but there is an obvious parking area. The trail starts not at the center of the parking area but on the right side if you are facing into the parking area. (Lat:43.91842 Lon:-70.88285)

This ia avery nice day hike, not to strenuous.. It's a good forty minute hike for a experienced climber. Watch your footing as you make your way up the second rock bed, it get's a little slippery. I reccomend this hike for families.. Great beginner or intermediate hike with breathtaking views.

One of the sickest mountain bike rides in the brownfield area. I can ride up a good amount of the snowmobile trail, but the greatest thrill of the ride is the high speed descent back to the bottom. Also, the beuty of the surrounding mountain ranges are amazing. I recomend this ride only for experts.

Very nice hike. Would not recommend for very small children. Last climb to the summit is very steep with many rocks. Easy to follow blue blazed trail. Are there any other routes? Views at the top are very good for a 1.5 hour hike.

Climbed the trail off of the pond but would like info on the trail that appears to lead off of a possible dirt road from Main Street. We walked it for a few yards down from the top and it looks like it could be an enjoybale ride on a board or skis. Overall the climb was very pleasant and enjoyed a bit of rock climbing on the ledges as we approached the summit.

If you're a mostly a day-hiker (like me), this hike is somewhat strenuous and a challenge, but, you will feel good when you reach the reach the summit. Don't feel too good, though, because getting back down proposes a few challenges as well. The trail is well marked and easy to follow, and the views from the summit and the ledges near the summit are fantastic. If you're strong you could probably do it in two hours, but take your time and plan for three.

To finish my above review.... I have climbed this mountain, both alone and with my family since the early 1990's. Alone (usually with my dog) a great solo climb. Just an hour from Portland (where I live). Has steeps which make the climb interesting. The top is as good as it gets. A 360 degree view although the trees have gotten higher over the years (less view, but more stabilization of what little soil there is). With my kids, a great introduction to the more demanding side of hiking. Tough, yes, but it gave them a taste of what it means to climb a mountain. If I was to design a 2.5-3.0 hour day hike, this would be my model. Has everything: short distance, steeps, views, close to where I live and a nice drive besides.

I consider this one of Southern Maine's hidden jewels. While Burnt Meadow isn't a towering mountain by any means, the 1200 foot elevation gain, variety of trail conditions (it's a very good trail), stunning views from the summit, and the fact that it's only 40 minutes from Portland, make it a sure winner. Also, don't let the mountain fool you, it's an intense climb.
