Summary: There are many ways to enjoy the brilliant beauty of the Calico Hills. There are several point to point stops along the trail which runs along the base of the Calico hills, adjacent to the paved scenic drive. This trail is open only to hikers and dogs on leash, no bikes or horses along this section; and it's a good thing because on busy holidays and weekends I've seen literally hundreds of people filling every easily accessible spot on and between the paved road and the Calico hills. This is a very popular rock climbing area and the sandstone makes for easy walking when it's dry. The trail from the visitor's center (Moenkopi), the signed crosswalk at the paved scenic drive, and beyond as you climb the ridge towards Calico I is so well marked, it's hard to imagine anyone losing the trail. But if you do lose your bearings, use the (basically parallel) paved road as your reference. Wild burros love to graze the areas along this trail so watch where you step!
Trailhead: 18 miles W of Las Vegas Blvd. on Charleston Ave. (SR 159) to Red Rock entry (fee) station. You've got several options of ways to enjoy hiking to and around the Calico overlooks, but I prefer to park at the lower visitor's center parking since it is the largest parking area and has great restroom facilities and connect with Moenkopi trail just N of the visitor's center along the desert tortoise habitat. The Calico Hills trail runs along the base of the Calico rocks from Calico Basin to Sandstone Quarry. The distance is variable since the trail can be accessed from the visitor's center, Calico I, or Calico II parking areas. In addition, a short side trail runs from the fee booth parking lot (you can avoid paying the entry fee this way) and connects with this trail -- this keeps hikers off the paved scenic drive. The approximate 2 mile distance is RT from visitor's center to Calico I & return. (Lat:36.13475 Lon:-115.42609)

Did this hike on a Saturday in October. Very busy. Despite the traffic, it was an excellent hike. Beware of rattlesnakes on this trail. We encountered one on the trail edge, even this late in the year. Recommend a quick rockclimbing trip at Calico 1 before heading back.
