Summary: Canyon Creek Trail is one of the more strenuous trails into the North Fork American River. The trail drops 1500 ft. to the river. It is a steep, hot hike back up from the bottom. Much of the trail is on private property. We do not encourage hiking on private property. If you do decide to come here, please be sure you "leave no trace". We do not want to see this old trail ruined or closed. Also be aware that the trail is extremely confusing, even with good directions. Trailhead: Along I-80 at Gold Run (22 miles east of Auburn). Trail Reviews Submit your own review Some of the trail is easy to find, but near the American River (where it's steepest) The trail is difficult or impossible to locate at times. It's easy to hit a dead ends blocked with a wall of thick manzanita where you have to back track. Not too bad going down but hell coming back up. We went down in about 1.75 hrs and came back in about 3.75 hrs. Lots of Poison Oak. There isn't much shade so go when it's cool. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous. You are responsible for informing yourself about these hazards and taking necessary precautions. Information on this web site comes from volunteer reporters and may contain errors or omissions. A current guidebook and proper equipment are essential for safe enjoyment of the hikes posted on this site.
