Summary: This is a fun, moderate hike that has a well-defined trail. Along the trail are many different desert plants, la cholla, prickly pear, sahauro, and desert shrubs. The first half of the hike, you will have a constant view of rugged mountain ridges. The second half of the hike will drop you down and right along a wash/creek bed that you will cross four times. During the monsoon season (May- August) the wash will be full of water, so be careful when crossing. Also remember that this is the desert and with it comes desert critters (snakes, scorpions, etc.) Keep your eyes open and you will be fine, and remember to drink lots of water!! During the summer months the best time to hike, would be in the morning hours. Trailhead: If you were headed North on Oracle rd (HWY 77) a couple miles past 1st ave. but before you get to Tangerine Rd. make a right into Catalina State Park. You should see a sign for the park. Head east until you come to the Ranger Station, there is a $6.00 daily fee. Continue east until you see the parking lot, and a few feet south of the parking lot is the trailhead. It was gorgeous with the sun peaking over the ridge line, casting all kinds of beautiful scenes, backlighting saguaro, trees, birds and insects, especially along the creek areas - spring-like riverlets were host to tadpoles, water spiders and other insects, with animal tracks in the sandy creekbed edges. We saw lots of wildflowers of many colors, tree leaves changing slightly and ant colonies that crossed our trail several places. It's a great place to take visitors and family who haven't explored our special terrain, but there are inclines so not everyone would maneuver the entire trail easily. Sutherland wash was beautiful near sunset with wildflowers and even trees changing color. Even in October there was still some flowing water. Except for a steep section in the beginning, most of the trail is flat and very easy. Even in October, this washbed was filled with colorful wildflowers. Loved the way this trail takes you through a saguaro "forest" and intersects with Sutherland and Romero trails. Nice short trail for horses and dogs, along with hikers.
