Summary: Carrigain is reputed to have one of the best views of all the whites because it is so central. You can see many of the well known NH landmarks including all of Franconia Ridge, Owls Head, the Bonds, the Pemi, Zealand notch, Tom, Willey, Field, Crawford Notch, the Presidential, the Dry River Wilderness, Carter-Moriah Range, Baldface Circle, Kearsarge North, Attatash, the Moats, Chicorua, Tripyramids, Osceola, etc, etc. At 10 miles RT it can be a strenuous hike taking up to 10 hours for slower hikers. The first two miles of the trail is generally flat, wide and easy to walk on. There is a platform at the top with stairs which yields 360 views. There are several brook crossings which can be difficult in high water. I recommend brining water sandals. We found that we could carry less water because there were several excellent sources for water (treatment advised). Trailhead: You must take the Sawyer River Road which is off of Route 302 just east of Crawford Notch. This is a dirt road which is not open in the winter months. Follow Sawyer River Road for approx 1.8 miles to a parking lot on the left. There is a self-service fee tube at the parking lot and $3.00 will be needed.
