Summary: Great early morning views of the mist on Nims Lake, and a small 8-10 foot waterfall make this a truly enjoyable hike. Several hills make this hike more interesting, and the views from the top are fantastic. You will cross a small creek many times, with water depth ranging from 1 inch to mid calf during the rainy season. There are an abundance of flowers and Flowering Dogwoods along the trail. This is a great moderate trail to hike, and with the bonus of Castle Rocks at the end, it makes the hike a great one. Trailhead: This hike is located on the Greater St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of America property. You must be a registered scout or scouter, and make reservations in advance for this hike. Located just south of Knob Lick, Missouri, this is one of many hike on 5800 acres of the Boy Scout property. Follow the main road on the scout property past Nims overlook to the Castle Rock sign/entrance. Castle Rock is similar, but on a smaller scale as a previous hike I took called Elephant Rocks. Parking is about 100 yards from the rocks, but we always take the trail north first so that we end at the rock formation as a treat. It's truly nice, especially in late fall. Taum Sauk and Pickle springs are similar hikes. I agree with JW. Set up a site for boy scout only trails. Please remove this listing. The public is not interested in something they cannot access. Thank you. Would probably be neat if it was open to the public. I wanted to go so bad I even drove up there. Pointless. This should be a site for posting places where EVERYONE can go, not just boy scouts. Aa a scouter for a local Boy Scout troop, I've hiked this trail several times with new scouts as their 5 mile hike for their second class rank. It is a great hike, but the trail is the 3 Notch trail and is on Scout property. You have to be a registered scout or scouter to access the trail. I lived by the scout ranch when I was a kid and I was always walking(hiking)to nims lake and castle rock. I would love to go again. This is to me the prettiest place in Missouri but maybe I just love the country. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
