Summary: This trail is a moderate climb up a nicely wooded mountain. Like other hikes in the area you will see an abundance of metabasalt rock formations as you hike up the mountain towards the quartzite summit, though here they are less spectacular than for instance the Cliff Trail to Cunningham Falls. The climb was a challenge for my 8 year old but not too dififcult to prevent us from making reasonable time. And there were plenty of interesting finds along the way. Listen carefully at .47 miles and you may hear an underground spring as it bubbles under some surface rocks. Upon reaching Cat Rock climb carefully to the top, there are few deep crevices but the view is worth the effort. Looking at a bearing of about 210° you'll see Bob's Hill, the final destination of the trail if you choose to continue the journey. If not, a short trek along the continuation trail will at least afford you a nice snack on plenty of plump juicy blueberries (July-August). Trailhead: The trailhead is located in the Cunningham Falls State Park, but outside the main entrance. To reach the trailhead take route 15 towards Thurmont where you will pick up 77 West. About 1.6 miles on the left will be a small parking area where the trailhead is located. If you reach the main entrance for either Cunningham or Catoctin National Park you have gone to far. Though, it was tiering. I would suggest to get a good nights sleep the day before and don't carry too much. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
