Summary: Cave Springs is a really pleasant, cool place to have lunch, water your horse or dog, or even camp overnight (see USFS for camp permit, fire restrictions). This is a nice stopping/rest point if you're on the strenuous North Loop trail going all the way to Charleston Peak. Cave Springs is also a nice destination which can be reached by either the Trail Canyon trail (adds 1 mile RT to Trail Canyon hike), or by the North Loop trail by hiking beyond Raintree (adds 5 miles RT to your Raintree hike). This hike is a good opportunity to teach children about respecting the forest - evidence of a major burn in the 1940's remains. If you ride horses to Cave Springs, don't bunch them together on the trail, there isn't room for more than a few horses at a time to water at the trough. The 3-way junction (signed, where you make your turn) is a nice wide open saddle where there is plenty of room to tie horses and take a break. Do NOT let horses or children on Cockscomb Ridge. Trailhead: Cave Springs is marked and referred to on some maps as the "water trough" (hollowed out log) along North Loop trail, .5 mile from Trail Canyon's 3-way junction on your way to Charleston Peak. Cave Springs is the trail to the L if you're coming up from Trail Canyon. Cave Springs is the trail on the R if you're heading down from Raintree towards Trail Canyon. If you're going all the way to Charleston Peak on the North Loop trail, you won't miss it. The trailhead for Trail Canyon trail is on Echo Road in Mt. Charleston. Take I-15 N from Las Vegas, 95 N towards Reno, SR 157 (Kyle Canyon), drive past the hotel, and 2 miles past the USFS ranger station. As the road curves sharply to the L, take Echo Dr. (R). Follow Echo Drive as it curves to the right, and park at the signed trailhead parking. The trailhead for North Loop trail is on Deer Springs Road (SR 158), just above Hilltop Campground, north of the turnoff from SR 157 -- refer to Raintree hike.
