Near:Simi Valley, CA
Scenery:
Distance:5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1100 ft
Hike Time:3 hours
Difficulty:Moderate

Summary: This is a pleasant hike, particularly during the spring when the hills are green and wildflowers are out. Be forewarned that the trail is a sustained uphill trek. There are several spectacular vistas where you can look out over the city of Simi Valley and on a clear day you can even see the Channel Islands. It's not unusual to see hawks circling above and even a deer once in a great while. This trail is also used by mountain bikers so keep a heads up for the speedy downhill riders.
Trailhead: From Highway 118/Simi Valley Freeway in Simi Valley, exit on Yosemite Avenue. Drive 0.4 miles north to Flanagan Drive and turn right. Continue 0.8 miles to the trailhead at the end of the road. (Lat:34.293176 Lon:-118.6703)

Hmmm... I would hike this again, as the continual gradient makes for a great workout. Surface is fine, small patch of "Roller Blade" stones in one area ( step on them wrong and go for a wee roll...) and vegetation is not pushing over the trail too much. The vistas and views of course are great once you get up there, but as a whole, the terrain becomes a very much of a muchness after a while. To be honest I saw better rock formations down Hummingbird, but Chumash has a certain sort of...hmm.."I want to walk you again" feeling about it. Theres great energy in this whole area, and Chumash although not an Oasis or Photog's best shot at every corner, has a certain "something" about it. I like it.

Wonderful hike trail; took the whole family and even my 5 year old was able to make the trek most of the way with little complaining. Great rocks to be found too!

Hiked the trail on 5/9/04. Lots of wildflowers growing from the ashes of the October 2003 fire. Good conditioning trail that leads back into the hills.

I have to take offence to "Simi" Carl's review. He obviously doesn't desrve that name because if he knew anything about Simi he would know that the Chumash not only left artifacts everywhere (open your eyes) including unbelievable art in the caverns located in the Knolls. I live just down the street from this area and have recently learned the flat area by the entrance of the trails will be turned into a recreational park. Maybe that may be more Carls style.

The trail is not that impressive. It is worth hiking once however. But to disagree with the other reviewer I must say that the Chumash were very intelligent stone crafters and woodworkers and were one of the most expressive tribes in North America with their amazing pictographs and rock art. So although the trail isnt that impressive the Chumash tribe definitly was.

Like the Chumash themselves, there is little inspiring about this trail. An ok hike if you are a local and need to burn a few calories.
