Summary: ... then gravel. At major "T" go right on 1000 Line Rd (NF-31). At next major "T" also go right on 1000 Line Rd. At mile 48, just as you start heading down hill look for an over grown on your left heading back the way you came. This is Sunnyridge Rd (NF-50 & NF-5081) at mile 51.5 take a right and follow down to Wright Creek Rd and go left. As you go under the power lines stay to the right (you'll go under them twice) then up a short climb. At abt mile 55.5 take a right onto old trail (the right road will have a deep trench cut across it to stop cars). This old log road comes out on a hill top by an old shed. Down road thru gate to junction, then to the other gate at your 10:00. As you come down hill take dirt road under the power line and continue straight (m. 57). Follow to mile 58.5 and look for single track on your left follow to road. Go left thru maze of log roads, don't branch off thru gate down to 35th SE, go left follow to the ocean and Newport. Whew!
Trailhead: While it says 30 miles, this is really 66 miles (program wouldn't go longer) so this is a multi-day hike. The first half approx 30 miles to Harlen. Second half is 35 miles from Harlen to South Beach. Trailhead begins in Corvallis Oregon at the Dimple Hill parking lot on Oak Creek Road. Follow Oak Creek to the end of Caldwell Hill Road, take trail to Kings Valley Hwy. Go left and follow to Wren, then Harris Rd to a left onto Tum Tum. At mile 23.6 take a left and at mile 25.25 stay right (up hill) and then down to Shotpouch Rd, then left at red bus stop on Shotpouch Trail Rd. At junction of three roads, take the middle one (m. 27) Half way down this trail it becomes a rough single track. Go right on gravel road at the bottom, then right on Harlen Road and into Harlen (mile 33). This is the half-way point. For the second 1/2 from Harlen head west Harlen Rd, Left on Grant Creek, then stay right on Hill Top road (NF-31) which is paved for about the next 8 miles... (Lat:44.5747 Lon:-123.3218)

Did this hike on mountain bikes with my buddy this summer. Instead of taking Sunnyridge road, we left Harlan and followed the Big Elk creek all the way down to Elk city and then to the coast. Definitely need a mountain bike to do it. If you want to make it a two day trip, you can camp at the Big Elk campground outside of Harlan (they have water there too). Gonna try this again in spring, lot of fun and adventure.

I haven't taken this route, but in the 90's a buddy and I rode through Philomath, then met up with Old Peak road on the north east side of Mary's peak, then towards tum tum and woods creak roads. I dont recall our exact path, but this gets you about 1/3 of the way to Newport and most of it on forest road rather than pavement. I'd love to find a complete path on unpaved roads. In looking at google maps, i think it will be possible.
