D&R Canal - Lambertville to Washingtons Crossing

Summary: The lower section of the D&R Feeder Canal is in excelent condition. The high water level is scenic and the park service keeps stocks the waterway with trout. The trail is even and almost perfectly flat from Washingtons Crossing to the Lamberton Lock. The bridges have signs that say you must walk your bikes across and they are not kidding. A guard from the New Jersy side will come out to chide you should you not walk your bike.

Utilizing the bridges at Washingtons Crossing and Lambertville to connect to the Delaware Canal on the Pennsylvania side makes a 15 mile loop.

Trailhead: In Lambertville, you can park at Mountain River Outfitters, off of Route 29 on Mt. Hope Street. (lat: N40 21.732 lon: W74 56.639)

There are also a number of lots at Washington's Crossing State Park. (lat: N40 17.838 lon: W74 52.048) There are picnic tables, restrooms and running water in addition to campsites and other hiking trails within the park. New Jersy state parks do not have trash cans so you must take any garbage you produce with you.

I love to hike the towpath along the canal and do so several times a week, in short sections. It is a great walk and very easy.
